Nancy Astrid Fortunato

Nancy Astrid Elliott Fortunato, age 86, of Frederick MD, died under Hospice Care on February 7th 2024, at Country Meadows Assisted Living Facility.

Nancy was born November 17th 1937 in Kings Mountain, Kentucky, the youngest child of Silas M and Bessie Adams Elliott.  Nancy was raised in Kentucky and Indiana.  After graduation from high school she attended 2 years of collage then moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for the Federal Government as a administrative assistant for the Department of Agriculture, the FAA then NASA.

While working and living in D.C.,  Nancy met her future husband George Fortunato.  They were married at St. Francis Xavier Church in Washington D.C. on October 20, 1962.  Nancy embraced George’s Italian heritage in her fabulous cooking, their travels throughout Italy and their shared love of opera.

Nancy retired from the Federal government after the birth of their son George John Fortunato Jr. on August 7th 1973.  While raising their son George Jr., Nancy went on to work with her husbands, managing the office operations of their HVAC maintenance company.

Nancy enjoyed waterskiing, fishing and beach time!  She was an avid reader and read the entire Washington Post newspaper each morning without fail.  In retirement, Nancy enjoyed going to estate sales, auctions, traveling, dining out and attending the Opera with her husband George.  She enjoyed collecting antique glass cruets, Hummel’s and Lladros.  Nancy was a dog lover and shared her life with Westies.  She never missed the Kennel Club Dog Shows at Thanksgiving!

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, George John Fortunato (2004), their son George John Jr (2007) and her 5 siblings.  Aunt Nancy was dearly loved by all who knew her but especially by her nieces and nephews.  She is survived by 22 nieces and nephews, 23 great-nieces and nephews and more than 12 great-great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Stauffer Funeral Home on February 12th at 2pm with a memorial service at 3pm. (1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702.) She will be buried with her husband George, at a later date, at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery.
