Reverend Monsignor James Vincent Hobbs
Reverend Monsignor James Vincent Hobbs, age 81, of Thurmont, MD died on Monday June 11, 2012. He was born on May 5, 1931 to the late Edward Guy Hobbs and the late Lillian Kelly Hobbs. He completed his seminary education at St. Mary’s Seminary in Roland Park before his ordination on May 25, 1957. The ceremony took place at the Basilica of the Assumption in Baltimore.
Msgr. Hobbs’ first appointment was assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in Cumberland, Maryland. After serving several parishes in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, he was appointed rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Baltimore, on June 1, 1992. While rector of the Basilica, he oversaw the visits to that church by Pope John Paul II and Blessed Mother Theresa. He also oversaw a $32 million restoration of the site which has since attracted many visitors. He remained as rector of the Basilica until he retired on January 31, 2008.
Msgr. Hobbs was named a Prelate to His Holiness in May of 1996 and was made a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre in October of 1998. He served as a member of the Priests’ Senate and the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council. After his retirement, he returned to Thurmont to be near family and friends in the vicinity.
Msgr. Hobbs is survived by sisters Mary Jo Williard and Ann M. Kot and husband Peter, his sister-in-law Louise Hobbs, and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. He was predeceased by his brother Edward G. Hobbs, Jr., brother in law Harold R. Williard and great-nephew Christopher Hobbs.
The family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St. Thurmont from 3-5 and 7-9 on June 15, 2012. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 10 am at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. Archbishop William E. Lori the Archbishop of Baltimore will be the celebrant. Interment will be at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Thurmont, MD
