Mother Emma Jean Russell was born on May 24, 1947 to the late Redus and Powell Garris in Sumter, South Carolina. She was one of 10 children. The family moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1958 at age 11. From the age of 12, Emma was saved and walked with the Lord. As a young women, Emma enjoyed serving in her church, singing praises to God, and would even makeup her own songs to the Lord. Emma graduated from Carrollton High School in Baltimore, Maryland and married the late John Eugene Russell in 1972. From this union six children were born.
Emma served as a nurse in church and was a nurse for over 50 years. After retiring in 2010, she enjoyed spending time with her family, her granddaughter and church family. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, church member, and friend.
Mother Emma Russell leaves to cherish her memory her six children: Antonio, Jeremiah, Joella, April Logan (Gregory), Johnathan, and Damian Russell. She also leaves siblings, Hester Garris, and Jessie Lee. Proceeding her death are siblings, Mary Nelson, Lily Mae Smith, Kathleen Garris, Rita Montgomery, Rebecca Green, Isaac Garris, Willie Garris. Her granddaughter Alana Russell, her New Prayer Mission Church of God in Christ family, and a host of relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd. Mount Airy, MD 21771 on Sunday, July 30, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, 403 S. Main Street, Mount Airy, MD on Monday, July 31, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Poplar Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery, 915 E. Watersville Road, Mount Airy, MD.
