Born May 24, 1919 in Hazleton, PA she was the daughter of the late John and Florence Rowse.
Mildred graduated from high school and attended business school. She joined the Navy during WWII, where she did administrative work. She joined because at the time, the US was asking for one person from every family to help with war effort. She served in the Navy in Washington, D.C. for one year then went back to Hazleton. However, she could still manage to tend to her bathroom needs and needed some assistance with a shower, she had a slight fear of water in her face. Mildred was also hard of hearing and had muscular degeneration of both eyes. One thing she loved was talking and observing people.
She met her husband Gordon, at the dances that were held in town. They were soon married. Gordon also served in WWII in the Army. Upon leaving the army, he obtained a job with Walter Reed Army Medical Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. They then both purchased a charming house in Silver Spring, MD, where they raised their three children.
