Mildred Catherine (Newkirk) Carson, 97, formerly of Boonsboro, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at her residence at the Methodist Manor House in Seaford, Delaware.
Born on December 9, 1915 in the Clear Spring District, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Devona (Shank) Newkirk. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Carson in 1987.
Mrs. Carson graduated from Clear Spring High School in 1933, received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and mathematics from Albright College in 1937, and completed a Master's Equivalency.
She taught at Boonsboro Elementary School for 24 years, retiring in 1977. She was a member of the County, State, and National Teachers Associations and the Washington County Retired Teacher's Association.
As a member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church in Boonsboro, Mrs. Carson was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and she formerly served as Superintendent of the Primary Department. She was a member of the Women’s Club in Hagerstown, the Boonsboro Homemaker’s Club, and a volunteer with the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary for 25 years. During her retirement, she enjoyed playing cards, traveling and quilting.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann Mueller of Georgetown, Delaware; a son Robert Carson and wife Barbara of Hagerstown, Maryland; and four grandchildren, Leanne Allen and husband William of Easton, Maryland, Kam Finckel of Sparks, Maryland, James Mueller and wife Christina of Alexandria, Virginia, and Amanda Mille and husband Adam of Chesapeake, Virginia. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Carson was preceded in death by her brothers Ralph and Harold Newkirk, and her sister, Lorraine Newkirk.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. Services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, September 23, 2013 at 11 a. m. with Rev. Ronald Kurtz officiating. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery.
