Michael "Mike" K. Cassidy, 66, from Thurmont, Maryland and previously of Prince George's County, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C.
Born on April 24, 1948, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late George and Margaret (Hoffman) Cassidy.
Mike graduated from Altooona High School in 1966. After graduation, Mike joined the Navy and was stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital before completing a tour in Vietnam. Later, he attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture.
He was a member of St. Timothy Catholic Church in Walkersville, Maryland. He was also the former Mayor of Cottage City in Prince George's County, and Past Commander and District Commander of the V.F.W. Post #8950 in Greenbelt. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
For more than twenty years, Mike worked for NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, as a computer programmer.
Mike loved spending time with his family, traveling, and was an avid train enthusiast.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Cassidy, whom he married on November 8, 1969; his three sons, Steve Cassidy of Thurmont, Joseph Cassidy of Germantown, Maryland, and James Cassidy and wife, Jennifer, of Thurmont; his two daughters, Yvonne Cassidy of Germantown, Maryland and Lisa Cassidy. his seven grandchildren, Kerri Kuhn, Rachel, Nataleigh, Thomas, Keegan, Ryleigh, and Jocelyn Cassidy; and his two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Lillie Kuhn. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Glass and husband, Tony, of Maude, Oklahoma; and his two brothers, Terry and Eugene Cassidy.
In addition to his parents, he is also predeceased by his son, Christopher Cassidy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2015, at St. Timothy Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Rd, Walkersville, MD 21793. Monsignor Richard Murphy will be the celebrant. Final resting-place ceremonies will follow at Utica Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Maryland 21702.
