Mr. Melvin Lee "Mel" Castle
Mr. Melvin Lee "Mel" Castle, 60, of Frederick, Maryland passed away suddenly on Tuesday, November 15th at his home. Mel was born on June 3rd, 1951 in Frederick, Maryland. He was the son of the late Marshall M. Castle and Mary H. Castle of Frederick County, Maryland.
Mr. Castle is survived by his brother, William M. Castle of Walkersville, Maryland and his nephew, LT.(jg), Sean C. Castle, US Navy of Jacksonville, Florida. In addition, he is survived by numerous cousins to include, Suzanne LaFond and her husband, William of Hampden, Mass., Linda Hitas and her husband, Frank Kosek of Wilbraham, Mass., Peter Hitas and wife, Kathleen of Agawam, Mass., David Hitas and his wife, Cheryl of Springfield, Mass., Andrew Hitas of Palm Court, Florida, and Paul Hitas and his wife, Kathy of Agawam, Mass..Mel is also survived by numerous cousins of the Castle family who reside in the Frederick County, Maryland area and Pennsylvania.
Mel attended Notre Dame Academy in Libertytown, Maryland, Linganore High School, and graduated from Thomas Johnson High School. He was a graduate of Hampden Sydney College in Virginia and earned his Master's Degree from Towson State University. He further earned a Pre-Doctoral Advanced Certificate in Clinical Psychology from a consortium of Universities in North Carolina. Mel was a star athlete at Thomas Johnson, lettering in several sports. He was a starting lineman on the football team and excelled on the wrestling team. In his Senior year at Thomas Johnson, he was the Cumberland Valley Wrestling Champion in his weight division. Mel played football at Hampden Sydney College in Virginia and served as a Resident Dorm Adviser.
Mr. Castle had a long and distinguished 30+ year career as a School Psychologist with the Frederick County Public School System. His guidance, counseling, and total devotion to his profession touched and positively enhanced many lives over the course of his career in the public school system. Of particular note, was his expertise in bereavement counseling whenever a tragedy occurred that affected the children and families in the Frederick County Public School System.
Mel was also devoted to his community and had a remarkable record of achievement in public service to numerous organizations. He was elected to the Republican Central Committee of Frederick County where he made noteworthy contributions to the electoral process. Additionally, he was a candidate for election to the Board of County Commissioners of Frederick County, Maryland and the Maryland House of Delegates. An ardent Patriot, he served in various capacities on campaign committees locally and statewide in Maryland. Mel held numerous leadership positions as Chairman and/or President of service organizations to include the Frederick Lion's Club, Mount Pleasant Ruritan Club, Homeowner's Associations, and Hunting and Fishing Clubs. Most recently, Mel was serving as President of the Citizen's Advisory Board to the Sheriff of Frederick County, Maryland.
Mel will be remembered as a true and loyal friend to his numerous hunting and fishing buddies, and could always be counted on by a friend in time of need. He enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout the United States and Canada and especially loved his sanctuary in Pennsylvania with a wide circle of sportsman-enthusiasts who became lifelong special friends. He will also be especially remembered by his Monday Domino game night friends in Walkersville, Maryland. Additionally, Mel loved his annual fishing trip to Canada with his numerous fellow sportsman friends of 30+ years and will also be fondly remembered by his Canadian family hosts.
Mr. Castle was a member of the Frederick Church of the Bretheren in Frederick, Maryland. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 21st at 11:00am at the Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick, Maryland. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 20th between 2:00 and 4:00pm and 7:00 and 9:00pm at the funeral home. Pastor Tim May will officiate the funeral service and interment. The interment will follow at the family plot at the Chapel Lutheran Cemetery on Daysville Road in Frederick County. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Mount Pleasant Ruritan Club Scholarship Fund 8101 Crum Road Walkersville, Maryland 21793. A reception will be held following the interment at the Mount Pleasant Ruritan Club.
