Maurice Hassett

May 31, 1919 — January 14, 2016

Maurice Martin (Maury) Hassett, 96, of Frederick, formerly of Walkersville, died Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the loving and beloved husband of the late Mary Elizabeth Hassett, his wife of 67 years who predeceased him by 15 weeks on October 1, 2015.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on May 31, 1919, he was the son of the late James J. and Helena M. Hassett.

Maury was Publisher Emeritus and founding publisher of the Frederick County Gazette Newspapers. His working life of over sixty years was spent in marketing and executive positions with firms in the Philadelphia and Frederick areas and involved department stores, wholesale corporations and entrepreneurial endeavors. The only interruption to that working career was almost three years during World War II when he served in England and North Africa with the 358th Bomb Squadron, 303rd Bomb Group (H), of the 8th Army Air Corps. He relocated to Frederick in 1959 where he was the manager of the Rosenour Department Store.

Maury believed in serving the community and, with a great love for children, served on the Board of Directors of St. Thomas More Academy, Friends of Catholic Education and on the Board of Trustees of the YMCA of Frederick County. He also served as a Director of the Rotary Club of Frederick and was a volunteer for the Historical Society of Frederick County and the Literacy Council.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Peter the Apostle Council 13290, where he had been a weekly participant in the Church's Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Program since its inception. Additionally, he was a member of The American Legion, Francis Scott Key Post 11, the John R. Webb VFW Post 3285, and the Rotary Club of Frederick.

Maury enjoyed mornings with the Frederick Coffee Club, Wednesday night dinners with dear friends at the American Legion and the flow of conversation with Friday lunch buddies at the Shamrock in Thurmont.

Maury is survived by six children, Richard M. Hassett of Thurmont; Kathleen M. Hassett of Frederick; John M. Hassett and wife, Lucy, of Baltimore; Barbara H. Mintzell of Scottsdale, AZ; Janet H. Hassett of Walkersville; and Megan H. Krucenski and husband, Ken, of Monkton; two daughters-in-law, Laura Hassett and Patricia Hassett; 22 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cherished friends. He also will be dearly remembered by Lisa Coblentz of Thurmont.

He was predeceased by three sons, Dr. Christopher M. Hassett, Kevin P. Hassett, and Stephen J. Hassett.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 9190 Church St. in Libertytown with Father Jason Worley as the celebrant.

Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Dr. Christopher M. Hassett Science Scholarship Fund or the Steve Hassett Memorial Scholarship Fund, either in care of the Community Foundation of Frederick County, Inc., 312 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701.
