Matthew Murphy passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 27, 2021. He was 19 years old. The son of Karen and Ted Murphy of Mount Airy, he graduated from Glenelg High School in 2020. He was currently enrolled at UMBC majoring in Chemical Engineering.
Matthew was an Eagle Scout and scholar athlete. He loved playing football and baseball or bantering on-line with his friends. He attended Saint Michael Catholic Church at Poplar Springs where he had been an altar server.
Due to his dependability and work ethic, he was well-known to neighbors for his willingness to help. He worked weekends as a stocker at Food Lion. Kind, considerate of others, and family-oriented, he was often seen on walks with his parents or helping in the yard. His older brother was his best friend and role model.
Matthew is survived by his parents, his brother, Luke Murphy and wife, Penny, of Saint Roberts, Missouri; grandmother, Anita M. Hehn of the Villages, Florida; Uncle Raymond Murphy and wife, Shannon, of Kingman, Arizona, Aunt Eileen Covell and husband, Ron, of Hamburg Pennsylvania, Uncle Patrick Murphy and wife, Susan, of Fleetwood Pennsylvania, Uncle Paul Hehn and wife, Debra, of Audubon, Pennsylvania, Aunt Valerie Bisconti of Ocala, Florida; and numerous cousins.
