Matthew Barber
July 13, 1978 — May 24, 2018
Matthew (Matt) Lee Barber ended his watch on May 24th, 2018. He was the beloved son of Toni D Barber and Donnie L Barber Jr and the grandson of Helen Wilkens. He is survived by his wife, Kalihah Indira Barber and his two young daughters, Kora and Kialee. Matt is survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who will dearly miss him.
Matt was a Damascus Cougar football player and went on to play for the Linganore Lancers until graduation in 1997. Matt always wanted to be a police officer so in high school he joined the Frederick County Sheriff Explorer Cadet Program. From there Matt started at Frostburg State and went on to get his AA at Frederick Community College. Matt then signed on with the Montgomery County Correctional Department in 2002 and worked at the Rockville facility (MCDC) This is where he met his bride to be and love of his life, Kalihah DeVaughn-Fowlkes.
In 2005 Matt landed his dream job with the Takoma Park Police Department. He started out as a Patrol Oficer and soon garnered recognition for his superior service. Matt received numerous Unit Citations, Memorandum of Commendations, Command Recognitions and in 2011 a Meritorious Service Medal Recipient. In addition Matt won the department First Place Shooter Award 5 times including back to back in 2015 and 2016.
Matt was extremely proud of his final assignment of Detective Sargent of the Special Assignment Team (SAT).
Matt was also a member in good standing with the Frederick Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge #684.
Matt devoted his life to making this a safer world for all of us. He was a devoted husband, a loving father to his two wonderful girls and good friend to those who knew him.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Oppossumtown Pike, Frederick. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 31 at 11:00 AM at Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Avenue, Frederick. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
