Mary Stotelmyer

Mary Lee Stotelmyer, 70, of Hagerstown, Maryland, died peacefully Sunday, December 17, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family following a year long battle with pancreatic cancer. Mary's desire to not give up helped her overcome many obstacles associated with the illness, but in the end it proved to be more than she was able to control.

Born on August 5, 1947, in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Thomas B. Graden and June L. (Shaffer) and William Kaplan.

Mary was a 1965 graduate of South Hagerstown High School. Mary and her husband, Robert, of 52 years, were married on June 11, 1965 in Hagerstown. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

Mary retired from the Bon-Ton in Hagerstown after 36 years as an assistant store manager. She was most happy when spending time with family and enjoying their activities. She was known as the kind of person that always put family, friends and others needs before her own. Enjoying annual vacations in Myrtle Beach with her family and friends was just one of Mary's favorite memories. Mary was determined to reach her favorite beach in her final days and, with the help of Hospice, family and friends, she did just that. She will be sorely missed by many.

In addition to her husband, Bob, Mary is survived by two sons, Michael L. Stotlemyer and wife, Pam, of Hagerstown and Darren M. Stotelmyer and wife, Wendy, of Funkstown; father-in-law, Robert C. Stotelmyer, Sr. of Hagerstown; granchildren, Jessica L. Stotelmyer Roy of Oakland, Maryland, Carter M. Stotelmyer of Funkstown and Brittany N. Brown of Hagerstown; great-granddaughters, Nevaeh and Aubree; step brother, William "Butch" Kaplan and wife, Barbara, of Maugansville; step sister, Suzanne Schleeper of Akron, Ohio; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Kailyn.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro, Maryland.

A celebration of Mary's life journey will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at the funeral home. Rev. Randy Reid will officiate. Burial will held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jim Schultheis, David Byers, Kevin Kaplan, Eddie Osbaugh, Eddie Thrush and Scott Stotelmyer.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
