Mary Shifler

Born on April 18, 1915, in Bolivar, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Lorenzo Martin and Bessie May (Sigler) Reeder.  Her husband of 65 years, D. Roscoe Shifler, preceded her in death on October 3, 1999.

In earlier years, Mary was an employee at Thomas and Sons Awning in Boonsboro, and she also worked at Eyerly's Department Store in Hagerstown.  She retired in 1977 from the Western Maryland Hospital where she was a seamstress.

Mary was a member of the Boonsboro Homemakers, the Hagerstown Women's Club where she enjoyed playing cards, especially the game five hundred, and she did volunteer work at Fahrney-Keedy.  Mary also was a volunteer for over 30 years with the American Red Cross, and will be remembered for her ongoing support for the Blood Mobile in Boonsboro.

She was a member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Boonsboro since her marriage in 1934.

Mary will be fondly remembered for her love for gardening and flowers, her pie baking, and her passion for playing cards.

She is survived by her daughter, M. Sandra Shifler of Boonsboro; her sister, Janet Otto of Hagerstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She will be also missed by her loving cat, Callie.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen and Viola Reeder, and Pauline Summers; and five brothers, Floyd, Melvin, Charles, Austin, and Robert Reeder.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 8, 2012 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro.  Rev. Don R. Stevenson and Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate.  Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends for 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at the funeral home.
