Mary Lee Schumeyer, 73, of Frederick, MD entered the kingdom of heaven on Thursday December 10, 2020 at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, MD. Born on October 1, 1947 in Portville, NY, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth R. Marsh and Vivian J. (Marsh) Marsh. She was the loving wife of Gerard Schumeyer for 52 years. She graduated from Portville Central School in Portville, NY in 1965. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY in 1969. She achieved her Master of Arts degree from Hood College in Frederick, MD in 1998.
During her husband’s assignment in Germany, she taught elementary school and after returning from overseas she continued teaching elementary school in Frederick County. She ended a career of public service working for Human Resources for Frederick County Government for 15 years. Mary Lee lived a life of service and thrived giving back to her community. She held numerous offices for the PTA, was the founder and president of the local chapter of CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder) in Frederick and served as the liaison for the Frederick County Commission on Disabilities for 15 years. She served as the president of the board of directors for an organization called “Peoples Place” and served on the Adult Guardianship Public Review Board for Frederick County. Mary Lee lovingly volunteered for Frederick Health Hospice and was also an active member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also served as secretary and board member of the Upper Potomac Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
Mary Lee took great pride in serving the Ft. Detrick Chapel congregation where, over the years, she served as President of the Protestant Parish Council, President of Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC) and oversaw or participated in numerous chapel ministries, including Vacation Bible School, her prayer shawl and hope ministry, community dinner, single soldier’s meals and during the holidays, Christmas stocking for soldiers. She always had time for the members of the congregation to listen, counsel, and pray.
Mary Lee loved the Lord and her faith and trust in his plan guided her and was the center of her decision making. She was the light and rock of her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Mary Lee loved being surrounded by her family. Her grandchildren brought immense joy to her life and she looked forward to hosting them for their annual cousins’ week get together. She brought amazing joy to their lives and will leave a legacy of love for generations to come.
Mary Lee is survived by her loving and devoted husband Gerard Schumeyer, children Gretchen Walter and husband Jeff of Northumberland, PA, Jennifer Duckworth and husband Kevin of Palm Coast, FL, and Matthew Schumeyer of Frederick, MD; a brother Michael Marsh and wife Fran of Spring, TX. She had six grandchildren: Madison, Abbie, Molly, Paige, Logan, and Charlie. She joined her sister, Nora Peasley, in Heaven.
The celebration of life will be held at a later date due to COVID restrictions. Interment will be at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, in Portville, NY in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Frederick Health Hospice or Heartly House both in Frederick, MD.
