Mrs. Mary L. (Woods) Phillips, 96, formerly of Brunswick, Maryland, passed away on Monday, December 29, 2014, at Citizens Nursing and Rehab in Frederick, where she had been a resident since 2011.
Born on August 18, 1918, in Brunswick, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rosa (Harrington) Woods. Her husband, Theron "Sam" Phillips, preceded her in death in 1966.
Mary attended Brunswick High School.
She was a faithful and devout Christian and devoted member of Faith Assembly of God in Brunswick. She was also a member of the Brunswick Senior Center.
Mary, along with her husband, owned and operated Wenner's Hill Grocery in the 1950's and early sixties in Brunswick. After her husband's passing, Mary began working for National Geographic Society, where she would retire in 1983 after many years of dedicated service.
Mary loved being with her family, friends, and most especially, the light in her eyes, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored. She also enjoyed tending to her African Violets and Azalea gardens.
She is survived by her loving daughter, JoAnn (Phillips) Leatherman of Frederick; her granddaughter, Lori Leatherman of Frederick; her great-grandson, Shane Leatherman and wife, Kaci, of Frederick; and her great-great granddaughters, Shayla Leatherman and Graci Buscher, both of Frederick. She is also survived by her sister, Arlene Clem of Cumberland, Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Josephine Albert; her brother, Joseph Woods; and her son-in-law, Lester Leatherman.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2015 at the Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 North Maple Avenue, Brunswick, Maryland 21716. Bishop Merle Lyles will officiate as well as Mary's dear friend, Edi Stewart.
Family will receive friends two hours prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home in Brunswick.
