Mary L. Henderson DeSpain Mate


Mary Louise Mate, 82, of Homewood at Crumland Farms, Frederick, MD, died peacefully on March 1, 2017.  She was a former resident of Gaithersburg, MD and a long-time member of the Pathways Baptist Church of Gaithersburg, formerly First Baptist Church of Gaithersburg.
Born September 15, 1934, in Pocahontas, AR; she was the eldest daughter of the late Lester W. and Lillie Tyler Henderson.
Twice married, her first husband of 24 years, Hugh DeSpain, died in 1982.  Most recently she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 32 years,  Dr. Frank A. Mate,  in late 2016.
Mary is survived by her dear sister Martha Brown and husband Alvie Ray, a niece Meredith Wren and husband Nick, a great niece Lindsey McDowell, and two great nephews, Jared and Jace Wren, all of Pocahontas, AR.  She is also survived by three much loved step-sons, Frank Clyde Mate and wife Shelley of Gaithersburg, MD, Christian Mate and wife Leanne of Boyd’s MD and John Mate and wife Jeanne of Annapolis, MD.  Also surviving are step-grandchildren: Christopher, Brian, Christian, Brett and Ainsley Mate.
Mary was a 1952 graduate of Pocahontas HS and routinely attended her class reunions.  Mary was executive secretary to the Director of NIST and retired in 1993 after a career spanning 28 years.
Memorial services and life celebration will be held March 13th at 2 PM, with fellowship to follow.  Pathways Baptist Church of Gaithersburg 200 W. Diamond Ave., Gaithersburg, MD  20877.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church.  www.pathwaysbc.org
