Mrs. Mary Ruth Marcum, 90, of Ijamsville, passed away at her home on Thursday night, March 26, 2015.
Mrs. Marcum was born on November 17, 1924 in Thurmont, Maryland, the daughter of the late Daniel Sayler and Anna Royer Weybright. She was the wife of the late Thomas M. Marcum, a conductor with the B&O Railroad.
Mary Ruth graduated from Thurmont High School in 1941. She attended Bridgewater College and graduated with a Masters Degree from Towson State Teachers College. A lifelong music teacher, she began her career at Brunswick High School in 1944 and continued with Baltimore City Public Schools for over 20 years. Music brought her and those around her much joy. She served as her church’s organist in Baltimore and after retirement, she and her husband continued to be active performers with the Go-Getters, a musical group that delighted audiences across Maryland.
After moving to Frederick County in 1988, Mary Ruth was a member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren where she sang in the choir. She was a docent at the Brunswick Railroad Museum and very much enjoyed teaching visitors about the B&O Railroad. She loved to travel and learn about culture and history. Her greatest joy was including her family in these enriching experiences. She was the family matriarch, a kind and gentle person who provided the energy and focus for gatherings of family and friends.
Mrs. Marcum is survived by her three children, Beverly Anna Marcum and husband Robert McNulty of Chico, CA, Milton Marcum of Baltimore, and Joyce Westen and husband Steven of Ijamsville, and three grandchildren, Stephanie Westen, Daniel Westen, and Robbie McNulty. Mary Ruth is also survived by her brother Harold Weybright and his wife Mary of Nokesville, VA and their children, Steven, Rebecca, David, and Anne. She was preceded in death by her brother Daniel Weybright.
Internment will be at Brownsville Heights Cemetery. A Memorial Service for Mary Ruth Marcum will be held at the Frederick Church of the Brethren on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 11:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brunswick Railroad Museum at 40 W. Potomac Street, Brunswick, MD 21716.
