Mary B. Goundry

Mary Bernadette “Bonnie” Goundry, 84, of Mt. Airy, MD, passed peacefully at home on January 20, 2025. She was the beloved wife of the late Frederick W. “Fred” Goundry, Jr. Born on March 4, 1940 in Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. and Mary Kathryn McKee, and her brother John E. McKee, Jr.

Bonnie is survived by her children, Ed (Carol) Goundry of Frederick, Matt (Debbie) Goundry of Mt. Airy, and Jenny (Rob) McCoy of Mt. Airy. She was the most loved “Muz” to six grandchildren: Will (Andi) Goundry, Ben Goundry, Lily McCoy, Luke Goundry, Kate Goundry, and Rachel McCoy; as well as two great granddaughters, Charlie and Lainey Goundry. She is also survived by her sisters, Patricia McKee, Kathy McKee, and Therese (Doug) McKee-Hungate, and her brothers, Frank (Mo) McKee and Joe (Ruth) McKee, as well as a large, loving extended family.

She graduated at the top of her class at St. Patrick’s Academy in Washington, D.C. As a life-long learner, she completed many courses at Montgomery College over the years. She was a stay-at-home mother when her children were young and returned to the workforce in the late 1970s. She worked as an administrative assistant at Fairchild and Orbital Sciences until her retirement in 2010. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters.

Fred and Bonnie moved to Mt. Airy in 1971. Bonnie hosted countless family gatherings at their home over the next 53 years. She was an amazing cook and her traditional Sunday dinners and holiday parties maintained the closely knit ties of her family as it grew. She enjoyed many trips to the family beach house in Ocean Pines. Bonnie and Fred celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary shortly before his passing in 2023.

She was a gifted seamstress and cross stitcher who made Halloween costumes, beautiful Cinderella dresses, and Christmas stockings for her children and grandchildren. She loved tending to her flowers, both indoor and outdoor, along with her bountiful vegetable garden. She had endless energy for helping her family tackle home improvement projects and caring for her beloved grandchildren. She loved cheering for her children and grandchildren in their athletic, academic, artistic, and professional pursuits, never missing an event or performance.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Uriel Worthington, who provided great care to Bonnie in her final years.
