Mary Elizabeth (Fisher) Garnand, age 104, of Boonsboro, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at Fahrney - Keedy Home & Village in Boonsboro, Maryland, where she had been a resident for nine years.
Born on May 31, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Henry Fisher and Lela Mae (Bovey) Fisher, and step daughter of the late Gladys (Smith) Fisher. Her husband, Lee "Danny" Grossnickle Garnand, preceded her in death in 1972. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Louise Rohrer, and her brother Lester B. Fisher.
Mary was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and she was also the last surviving member of her 1931 graduating class from Boonsboro High School.
She had worked at Leiter Brother's Department Store/Routzahns, and at Rosen's. She also was known as the "Chicken Lady" when she had been an employee at the Tastee Freeze in Boonsboro.
Mary loved to garden. She also loved to travel, having visited 49 of the 50 States, with Oregon being her only miss. She was very active in the community, having participated with the PTA at the Keedysville School, served as a leader with 4-H, and was Past-Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Olive Branch Chapter 34, now the Hagerstown Chapter 89.
Mary was a former member of Salem United Methodist Church in Keedysville, and was currently a member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church in Boonsboro.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean Elizabeth Burns of Boonsboro and Janet Lorraine Taylor of Maugansville; her long-time friend, Mary Jane Blickenstaff of Boonsboro; two grandsons, Brian Taylor and wife Cheryl of Hawaii, and Brent Taylor and wife Carol of Cearfoss, Maryland; six great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren; three grand dogs; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2016, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. Rev. Twyla D. Rowe will officiate. Interment will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at the funeral home .
