Mary Cummings

August 20, 1919 — February 6, 2011

Mrs. Mary Ellen (Reynolds) Cummings died Sunday, February 6, 2011. She was the wife of the late William F. Cummings.


Born August 20, 1919, the only child of Ethel B. Burdette Reynolds and Powell E. Reynolds in Mason County, West Virginia.

Mrs. Cummings was educated at Point Pleasant High School, Marshall University and Perry Business School of Brunswick, GA. During her career she was employed by county , State and Federal Governments. In Federal government service she worked for OPA at the local Rationing Board -  sugar stamps and others.

Mrs. Cummings was always interested in fabrics and what you could make with them. In 1986 a quilting group, named Mt. Tabor Quilters, was organized and she continued working with them until 2010 when poor vision interfered. For 10 years she wrote a quilting column for the Emmitsburg Dispatch.


Survivors include her daughter Karen L. Smith and husband Larry of Thurmont; and grandson Lee W. Smith of Thurmont.
She is preceded in death by her son William C. Cummings.


Friends may call from 4-7 PM on Tuesday, February 8, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont where services will be held at 2:00PM on Wednesday, February 9. Pastor Jim Russell will officiate. Interment will be private.
