Ms. Mary Jane Carbaugh (née Burrier), of Thurmont, MD, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at the age of 78.
Jane - or MJ as she was fondly known by friends and coworkers - was born to parents, Calvin and Margaret Burrier on January 25, 1940. Jane grew up in a large family with numerous siblings. After attending the former Thurmont High School, Jane went on to marry and give birth to five daughters – Terri Lynn, Cynthia Elaine, Leslie Kae, Laurie Diane & Brandi Nicole. In early 90s Jane married John “Jake” Carbaugh, joining their extended families of grown children, and several grandchildren.
Jane worked for many years as one of the chefs at the former Cozy Restaurant, under perhaps its most memorable owner, Mary. During her time there, she had the pleasure of preparing and serving her delicious meals to some of the most distinguished guests from our nation’s capital. In the late 80’s, she took a position with Mount St. Mary’s College & Seminary, where she treated staff and students alike to her wit and baking, and gained some of her most enduring friendships. Jane was the definition of “do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life” and so she remained at Mount St. Mary’s until her retirement in 2005.
Everyone who met MJ knew she enjoyed sharp, friendly banter. Her comedic criticism was reserved for those nearest and dearest to her heart and was buffered with her generous warmth, love and homemade meals and baked goods. Cooking and baking were just two of MJ’s passions. She frequently hosted lively dinner parties and holiday celebrations with family and friends serving up ample quantities of wonderful food, laughter and love. Her hugs were legendary. Her wit, love and laughter provided great and enduring warmth to her friends and family for their lifetime and hers. All who knew and loved her were lavished with her enduring supportive generosity and loyalty.
Jane is preceded in death and will be welcomed in heaven by her parents; twin sister, Nancy Burrier; husband, John; siblings, Calvin Burrier, Jr., George “Pat” Burrier, Howard “Bud” Burrier, Jim Burrier, Anne Moore & Cheryl Bittner.
Jane is survived by her sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Mann, Barbara Kramer, and her brother, Ken Burrier; along with countless adored nieces and nephews. In addition, she is survived by her five daughters, or as she called them, “her five beautiful, strong and independent girls” and their spouses – Terri & Donald Higgins, Cynthia & Ken Webb, Leslie & Jeff Wetzel, Laurie & Carroll Glass, and Brandi & Darren Churchey. She also leaves behind her deeply cherished grandchildren - Kristopher, Sabrina, Nathan, Shawn, Zachary & Steven; as well as her dearly loved great grandchildren - Chase, Bryce, Koen, Riley, Keith, Payton and Ella.
A religious service honoring Jane will be hosted on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 2:00 pm by her daughters at Stauffer’s Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702. Immediately following the service will be social gathering with light refreshments where family and friends can celebrate her life together (same location).
