Mary Sue Burley August 18, 1938 - March 5, 2022, age 83, passed away at Fahrney Keedy Memorial Home Memory Care unit on March 5. She was born on August 18, 1938, in Calhoun County, WV to Wilma Dale Weaver McMillin and Joseph William McMillin. Mary Sue is preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband of 55 years Donald. L. Burley. She is survived by her children J. Bruce Burley (Connie), Julie Ann White, and Jodie Lynn Burley. Her grandchildren Celia White, J. Brandon Burley (Ashley) and great grandchildren Blake and Everett, and Allison Janelle Burley Kappler (Andrew) and great grandchildren Carter and Kasen. Mary Sue graduated from Roosevelt-Wilson High School in Clarksburg, WV where she was cheerleading captain and a distinguishedhonors graduate. She attended Fairmont State College where she met the love of her life, Don. Upon Don's graduation from college they were married and moved to Parkersburg, WV where she began teaching second grade at Roosevelt School in Parkersburg, WV. They travelled to Washington County to visit friends in early 1968, fell in love with the area and moved here 6 months later, though they always considered West Virginia "Almost Heaven". Mary Sue earned her BA in Education from Shepherd College with honors and Masters in Education from Frostburg State College. She was an elementary school teacher in Washington County at Boonsboro Elementary School, Conocheague Elementary School and Fountain Rock Elementary School, where she taught with "some of the best teachers that she has ever had the pleasure of knowing." In recent years she enjoyed traveling with Don, often combining travel with genealogy study. Prior to the pandemic, Mary Sue was blessed to be a part of the retired teacher's group from Fountain Rock Elementary. Don and Mary Sue were wonderful parents and grandparents and are deeply missed. A funeral service will be held at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland, with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown. Pastor Suzanne Jones will officiate. Per the family's wishes, funeral and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Mary Sue's memory to First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Avenue, Hagerstown, MD, or to Humane Society of Washington County.
