Marshall Matthews, Sr.

Mr. Marshall Douglas Matthews, Sr. 86, of Thurmont, MD died at St. Catherine’s Nursing home on November 8, 2015. He was surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his wife E. Leonis Matthews who passed away 13 days before Marshall. They were married for 66 years.

Marshall was born in Beallsville, Maryland on June 24, 1929 to Lucille Titus Matthews and Russell Matthews, Sr. In his youth, he worked on the family farm.

Marshall and Leonis operated a dairy and crop farm for most of their lives. Additionally, he was a contract school bus driver for Frederick County Public Schools for twenty-eight years. Marshall was a hard working man who loved his family. He was good natured and enjoyed being around people. In earlier years, he enjoyed archery, league bowling and pitching horseshoes. He loved to dance and roller skate.

He is survived by his children and their spouses:

M. Douglas Matthews, Jr. and wife Emily of Waynesboro, PA

Richard W. Matthews and wife Karen of Emmitsburg, MD

Althea Wood and husband Gary of Fairfield, PA and

Laurie Rerko and husband David of Frederick, MD.

Grandchildren:

Daniel Matthews and wife Carol, Scott Matthews and wife Kate, Jenifer Mackley, Shannon Neubauer and husband Chris, Kelly Betz and husband Michael, Kathryn Rerko and Christopher Rerko.

Great grandchildren:

Danielle Pastore, Ethan and Claire Matthews, Breanna Mackley, Jake and Katelyn Neubauer, Zoey and Sophie Betz.

He is also survived by his brothers: Charles Matthews and wife Gladys, Edward Matthews, Robert Matthews, Donald Matthews and sisters Evelyn Kovach and Mary Jane Warrenfeltz and husband Richard and sister-in-law Mary Katherine Matthews. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Patsy Weller and husband Roland and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his brothers Russell and wife Charlotte, William and Raymond.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2015. Marshall was a fun-loving person who did not enjoy dressing up for any occasion. You will recall that he always wore a plaid shirt, work pants, work boots and hat and was chewing tobacco. Please feel free to dress casually for the viewing and funeral.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, November 13, 2015 at Stauffer funeral home in Thurmont, MD with interment following at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
