Mrs. Marjorie Lee Jones Smith, well known educator and community leader died
Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick. She was 103. Marge, as she was affectionately known attended Frostburg State College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She taught 30 years in the Frederick County School System teaching elementary school, primarily 2nd grade, at Brunswick, Liberty and Walkersville. She loved teaching and was particularly pleased to have been selected to guide Hood College education students through their practice teaching.
While teaching in Brunswick, Mrs. Smith met her future husband, Harry O. Smith, also a Frederick County educator. They settled in Walkersville and celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in 1998. The couple seemed to always be together. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Frederick County Teachers Association and the Maryland Retired Teachers Association. She taught Sunday school and junior choir
at the Glade United Church of Christ in Walkersville. She was a member of the Lions Club Auxiliary, was honored for 50 years of service by the Walkersville Homemakers' Club, and was awarded the Golden Sheaf by the Glade Valley Grange for 50 years of service. She was selected, along with her husband, as among Maryland's outstanding senior citizens by the Maryland Jaycees. The Governor of Maryland
appointed her to the Maryland Lung Association Board and in addition she was appointed to the Board of Social Services of Frederick County. Mr. and Mrs. Smith worked as poll watchers in the Walkersville precinct, volunteered for the Heart Fund, the Cancer Drive, Walkersville Carnival, the Glade Valley Food Bank, helped serve food to the homeless, transported cancer patients for treatment, helped out at the
Great Frederick Fair and at Rose Hill Manor. Mrs. Smith enjoyed swimming, square dancing, bowling and travel.
Mrs. Smith was born in Brunswick, Maryland in 1909, the sixth child of Howard Marvin Jones and Mabel Clarke Pierce. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 5 sisters. Survivors include two sons, Richard Marvin Smith, an attorney in Washington, D.C., and Dr. Ronald Edward Smith, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles; 4 grandchildren,
Kelly Margaret Smith Parker, Dr. Matthew Pierce Smith, Michael Harry Bowman Smith, Specialist Mark Jason Bowman Smith, U.S. Army; and four great grandchildren, Cole Parker, Austin Parker, Sophia Smith and Catalina Smith.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville on Friday, April 6, from 6 – 8 pm. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 7, at Glade United Church of Christ, 21 Fulton Avenue,, Walkersville. The Rev. Philip Curran and the Rev. Gerald Hanberry are officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro.
