Marilyn Rose Morton died on Monday, March 18, 2019, of natural causes.
She was the wife of the late Ernst Leopold Lidl. Born on August 16, 1943, in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Charles Herbert and Ellen (Peterson) Morton.
After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, she attended Strayer's Business College before working as a secretary at the State Department on the Indonesian Desk. Marilyn was a proponent of organic gardening long before it was popular and grew a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers after moving to Smithsburg in 1973.
For more than 30 years, she raised livestock, including Saanen goats, which brought her great pleasure. While she really enjoyed living in the country, she also kept a soft spot in her heart for Washington.
She greatly appreciated the assistance she received from friends nearby after she started living on her own.
Marilyn was an avid listener of local and national programs on National Public Radio (NPR), and was always eager to research what she had heard. Discussions with her ranged from a book review, interesting math courses, genealogy, or international events. She tried to keep a world almanac close at hand to help her understand details like a country's current population and how the topic fit into the world at large. She also enjoyed being a grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter, Grace Lidl, her son and his wife, Kurt and Debbie Lidl, and her grandsons Zach and Leo Lidl.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at 10 AM, with a celebration of life service at 11 AM, followed by additional visiting hours until 1 PM, at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702. Burial will occur on Monday, March 25, 2019 at 11 AM at Smithsburg Cemetery at 86-98 Water Street, Smithsburg, MD.
