Maridell Leonard Mason (75) of Frederick, MD, passed away peacefully on December 15th, after a long illness. She was the widow of the late Karle Albert Mason, U.S. Army (Retired). They were high school sweethearts at Windham High School in Willimantic, CT, married in 1962 and were married for 52 years. Maridell was born in Bellows Falls, VT and raised in Coventry, CT. She attended Nasson College, Springvale, ME where she studied home economics.
Maridell was involved in the 4H Program as a child and as a leader when her children were young. Later in life, she became interested in ancestry, quilt making, and button collecting. She wrote a family history dedicated to her mother called “Pal O’ Mine” and published several articles on button collecting. She was active in multiple button clubs and quilt guilds and enjoyed traveling to various shows and meetings.
During her husband’s army career, Maridell and her family were evacuated from Amman, Jordan during the Six-Day War, lived in Tehran, Iran, and Athens, Greece for a short time and in Germany and Belgium for several years each. Her desire to travel never diminished. She moved to Frederick, Maryland in 1987.
Maridell’s battle with cancer, especially over the last four years, has been inspirational to her friends, family, and acquaintances as she was intentional in “making memories” by traveling to visit friends and family and attending button and quilting events as far away as Denver. At the time of her passing, she was actively working on her button collection, a needlepoint project, and quilt.
Surviving Maridell are her three children and their families: Wayne Leslie Mason, his wife MaryLee, their children Aubrey and Joshua; Deborah Lynn Brown, her husband Scott, their children Nathan, Nicholas, and Sophia; and Timothy Leonard Mason, his wife Andrea, and their children Gage and Faith. Also, surviving Maridell are her two siblings and their families, Betty Czaplicki and Russell Leonard, and several cousins.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick Maryland on December 28th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at the same location on December 29th at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Fisher House Foundation (www.fisherhouse.org) 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850. The Fisher House was very helpful to Maridell when her husband passed away in 2014.
She will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.staufferfuneralhome.com.
