Mrs. Marianna R. Nelson (nee, Lavorata), 88, of Mount Airy, Maryland, passed away, Thursday, January 8, 2015, at the Lorien Life Center, Mount Airy. She was the wife of the late Carrol L. Nelson.
Born August 12, 1926, in Piedmont, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Santo and Erminia (Gentile) Lavorata.
Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Saint Michaels Catholic Church in Mount Airy. In earlier years she was employed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. where she researched genealogy for people searching for their roots. She was an avid traveler, traveling throughout the United States and Europe; one would say she traveled more than most people in a lifetime, but never had a driver’s license. She especially loved to sing and listen to the Opera, reading westerns (especially Louie Lamour), and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her sons Anthony Nelson and wife Cathleen of Mount Airy, Maryland and Joseph Nelson and wife Debbie of Laurel, Maryland, her daughters Rosanne Doyle of Severn, Maryland and Carolanne Decker and husband Stephen of Laurel, Maryland, 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister Teresa Paoletti, brother Santo Lavorata, and great granddaughter Ava.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Boulevard, Mount Airy, Maryland on Thursday, January 15 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 16, at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church of Poplar Springs, 1125 Saint Michael’s Road, Mount Airy, Maryland with Rev. Michael J. Ruane as Celebrant
Interment will take place in Saint Michael’s Catholic Church Cemetery.
