Matthew F. Borg, beloved husband of Margot P. Borg and father of Roger A. Borg and Angela B. Moon, passed away suddenly February 5th, 2017 at the age of 89. Matthew was born in the Bronx, New York during the rough and scrabble existence of the Great Depression. Like his older brothers Sydney and Robert, Matthew pursued a degree in engineering at the City College of New York (CCNY) graduating in 1950 with a B.C.E. degree. While at CCNY, Matthew was the photography editor of CCNY’s engineering magazine “Vector” while being in R.O.T.C. He went on to earn a master’s degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University in 1959. Under the auspices of the U.S. Navy, Matthew attended the University of Florida, University of Connecticut and the University of Miami for applied mechanics, ocean engineering and electrical engineering. Matthew is a former member of the A.S.C.E. and the Acoustical Society of America.
Matthew spent many years working for Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut. Trading snow for sand, Matthew moved the family to central Florida in the early 60’s and began a long career working for the U.S. Navy. As a project engineer at the U.S. Navy Strategic Systems Project Office from 1972 until 1987, Matthew worked on the development of training systems for the Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine Program. During his employment with the U.S. Navy, Matthew received numerous recognitions for his dedicated service and outstanding achievement awards.
During his career he was an instructor in civil engineering at Lehigh University and an adjunct instructor in applied mechanics and mathematics at various universities in Connecticut and Florida. Matthew also has numerous engineering, ocean engineering and acoustics related articles to his credit that were published. After leaving the government, Matthew worked as an engineering consultant until full retirement in 1992.
Matthew was married to Margot for 67 years until his death. Matthew has two children, Roger and Angela and four grandchildren Paul, Erin, Kieri and John.
Margot Pappaterra Borg passed away in Fredrick, MD after a long illness on June 2, 2018. She was 92 years old. Margot was born in Caracas, Venezuela and came to New York City in her early twenties to work at the Venezuelan Consulate. While there she met the love of her life, Matthew F. Borg, and they were soon married. Margot was primarily a homemaker but she was a well known potter in the cities she lived in Florida, Virginia and Maryland. She taught pottery as well as exhibited and sold her own works, leaving an extensive collection to her children. Margot left behind two children, Angela B. Moon and Roger A. Borg, and four grandchildren Paul, Erin, Kieri and John-Michael. Her husband predeceased her after 67 years of marriage. She will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her.
Matthew and Margo were loved by their family and they both are greatly missed.
