Margaret Neely

Margaret S. Neely passed away Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Buckingham’s Choice in Adamstown, MD. She had been resident in the facility’s Heath Care Center since 2002. She was the widow of Dr. Wayne C. Neely, former Chairman of the Department of Economics and Sociology at Hood College, who died in 1994.
The only child of Walter and Grace Snyder, Margaret was born August 29, 1916 in Elmira, New York. She graduated from Elmira College with a bachelor’s in biology and earned a master’s degree from what is now Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
Margaret joined the Hood College faculty in 1942 as a chemistry instructor. During a distinguished career at Hood, she also directed the chemistry program at Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, and led the nursing program the college maintained in affiliation with the Massachusetts General and Johns Hopkins Hospitals. She was active in faculty-student affairs and served for years as a college marshal. Mrs. Neely retired in 1981 as Assistant Professor Emerita of Chemistry. In 1992 the Director’s Suite in the Hood College Library was named for the Neelys, and a classroom was named in her honor when the Hodson Science and Technology Center was dedicated in 2002.
Married in 1948, Margaret and Wayne resided on Carroll Parkway in Frederick, where they enjoyed a ringside seat for Baker Park celebrations. For many years, Margaret accompanied Wayne, an avid breeder of Shorthorn cattle, on long summer visits to his family farm in Iowa and to cattle judging contests across North America. She was a member of the Maryland Shorthorn Association and the Shorthorn Lassies. In 1993, Wayne and Margaret donated 160 acres of Iowa farmland to the Wallace Foundation for Rural Research and Development to establish an agricultural experimentation facility managed by Iowa State University.
In community affairs, Mrs. Neely served as local president of the American Association of University Women. She was a member of the Founders’ Circle for The Arc of Frederick County endowment fund. She made the initial contribution to what become the Frederick Rotary Club’s Margaret and Wayne Neely Fund, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1982 in recognition of her contributions to Rotary. She was a member of the the American Chemical Society and the Frederick Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Neely was grateful to the staff at Buckingham’s Choice for the many kindnesses shown to her during her residence there, and deeply appreciated the compassionate care she received.
Friends are invited to gather at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, in
Frederick, Thursday, February 14, 2013, at 10:00 am to celebrate Margaret’s life. A memorial service will begin at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, Margaret has asked that donations be made to deserving Frederick charities.
