Mrs. Madeline Jean Myers, 76, of Thurmont, Maryland, passed away on June 30, 2014 at Washington Adventist Hospital. Married August 27, 1955 at Mount Tabor Lutheran Church in Rocky Ridge, Maryland, Jean was the wife of C. Rodman Myers. They own and operate, along with their children, Catoctin Mountain View Farm.
Jean was born on October 31, 1937, near Loy’s Station, Rocky Ridge, Maryland and was the daughter of the late Robert Bruce Ogle and Helen Barrick Ogle. She was a graduate of Thurmont High School Class of 1955 and served on the planning committee for her class reunions. She was a member of the Creagerstown Girl’s 4-H Club and continuously supported 4-H, the Catoctin FFA and FFA Alumni programs and activities. She met her husband through 4-H, as he was a member of the Creagerstown Boy’s 4-H Club. In her early years, she was active in the youth programs at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church.
Jean’s proudest accomplishment was the devoted love for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was proud to be a farmer’s wife and was a homemaker for many years. Jean enjoyed cooking and baking and was well known for her delicious coconut cake, which won many ribbons at the Thurmont & Emmitsburg Community Show. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and served on the Board of Directors for the St. John’s Christian Preschool. She was also a charter member of the Frederick County Farm Museum; a member of the Thurmont Historical Society and she volunteered annually in the kitchen during the Rocky Ridge carnival. In 1991, the Rodman and Jean Myers family were one of the first three farm families inducted into the Maryland Agriculture Hall of Fame.
Jean was a 58 year member of the Thurmont Grange, in which she served as Women’s Activities Director and chairman of the Sunshine Committee for many years. She was a member of the Frederick County Pomona Grange, Maryland State Grange and a 7th degree member of the National Grange. For two years, Jean served in the office of Flora for the Maryland State Grange. Jean and Rodman served as the Maryland State Grange Young Couple in 1961. She was co-chairman of the annual Thurmont Grange Dinner at the community show and also helped sell food for the Grange during the Catoctin Colorfest. She was also a member of the Thurmont & Emmitsburg Community Show Committee, where she served as Treasurer for many years. Jean assisted each year at the Community Show in the baked products department. She enjoyed judging items at local community shows and the Frederick Fair and going to Mountain Gate Family Restaurant in Thurmont on Friday nights with her husband. Jean enjoyed reading newspapers, listening to music and sending cards for all occasions.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her four children, Patty A. Johnston and husband Dave of Hagerstown; Cheryl L. Lenhart and husband Bob of Thurmont; Robert C. Myers and wife Karen of Thurmont and Andrea J. Mannix of New Paltz, New York. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Stephanie Ott and husband Davey of Emmitsburg; Kevin Mannix, Daniel Myers, Kristen Myers, Denise Mannix, Matthew Lenhart and Eric Myers and her great-grandchildren, Madison Ott and Owen Ott. She is also survived by her brother, Ben Ogle and his wife Teresa; and sisters, Peggy Trout, and Mary Kesterson and her husband Mike. She was predeceased by her brother, Terry Ogle. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers at her funeral.
The family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street, Thurmont, Maryland on Thursday and Friday, July 3 and 4, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral services will be held at Stauffer Funeral Home 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont, Maryland on Saturday, July 5, at 10:30 am with Rev. Paul Leatherman and Rev. Susan Beck officiating.
Interment will be at the Blue Ridge Cemetery in Thurmont, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 East Church Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701, for any of the following three funds: the C. Rodman and M. Jean Ogle Myers Fund for grants to the Frederick County 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program and Maryland FFA Foundation, Inc.; the Thurmont High School Alumni Scholarship Fund or the Betty L. Brown Endowment Fund for St. John’s Christian Preschool of Thurmont.
