Mabel Hoffman

July 14, 1923 — January 2, 2015

Mabel V. Bishop Hoffman, 91, of Frederick, MD passed away peacefully at Edenton Retirement Community on Friday, January 2, 2015.  Mabel was born in Dawson, MD, July 14, 1923, daughter of the late Ernest L. and Martha (Long) Bishop.  She married Frenis W. Hoffman, in Cumberland, MD on July 16, 1939.  She is survived by daughter Wilma Hoffman Woodfield, and son Frenis W. Hoffman, Jr. and his wife Faye, four grandchildren (Forrest Hoffman (Glenda), Debra Woodfield, Steve Hoffman (Donna) & Sharon Woodfield) and five great-grandchildren (Rachel Hoffman, Alex Smith, Christian Hoffman, Ethan Hoffman and Collin Hoffman), and her brother Rev. Franklin Bishop and his wife Mary.  She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2012, a sister Evelyn Smith, a brother John Long, step-mother Ola F. Bishop, and son-in-law David Woodfield.  Mabel was formerly employed at McCrory Stores in Cumberland, MD, Allstate Insurance Company in Silver Spring, MD and spent 25 years with the Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery County, Maryland.  She held the title of Ms. Senior Pennsylvania in 1986 and went on to be honored as Ms. Senior America in 1987.  She is listed in Who’s Who in the Women of the World.  She was an active volunteer and served as a state director with the AARP.  She was past president of Everett Lioness and wrote newsletters for various organizations, member of the DAR, past queen and member of Daughters of the Nile, RE Temple 118, Cumberland, MD.

Mabel enjoyed reading, sewing, crafts, cake decorating, gardening, travel, genealogy and flying (she soloed in a Cessna 152 and successfully passed the FAA exam, logging approximately 200 hours).  More recently, she volunteered at Orchard Grove Elementary School in their reading program.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 from 10-11 am at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD where a memorial service will begin at 11 am.  The Rev. Franklin Bishop (her brother) will officiate.  Interment will be in Fairview Christian Church, Artemas, PA at the convenience of the family.  Expressions of sympathy may be expressed to the family at www.staufferfuneralhome.com.
