Louis Stanley {Buddy} Diamond

Louis Stanley (Buddy) Diamond (1920 - 2009) died on September 6, 2009.

He was born in Philadelphia, PA to Harry Nathan and Sophia Diamond.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania (1940), he studied parasitology and protozology, and earned his MS from the University of Michigan (1941) and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (1958)

He worked as a scientist for the Fish and Wildlife Service, Patuxent Research Center in Laurel, MD (1951- 1953); the Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, MD (1953-1959); and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD (1959-1994).

He was renown for his studies of the biology of Entamoeba histolytica, a leading cause of infectious dysentery in humans. He traveled widely, helping to establish laboratory procedures for the cultivation and study of E. histolytica, worldwide.

He served in the Army Air Force (1943-1946) and Army (1945-1946) and continued his military service as an officer in the Army Reserve, becoming Executive Officer of the 2290th U.S. Army Hospital (1973-1975) and retiring at the rank of Colonel in 1980.

He was a devoted husband and father. Survivors include dear and devoted wife Mildred Diamond with whom he shared his life for 70 years, who lives in MD; sister Margot Kalin, who lives in PA; daughter, Janis Solovey, who lives in MD; two sons, Hank Diamond, who lives in OH, and Gary Diamond, who lives in NY; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He lived a life dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge.

He was an avid bird watcher and naturalist and loved art, music and dance.
