Lois Howeth Butler

July 25, 1917 — September 19, 2016

Lois Edith Howeth was born July 25, 1917 in Syracuse, NY.  She was the only surviving child of Albert Marian and Edith Catherine Howeth.    Her childhood years were spent in Union Springs, New York located on the shores of Lake Cayuga.   In those cold lake waters Lois learned to swim and love the water.   She graduated at the head of her class at Union Springs Academy and left home to attend Atlantic Union College.   Lois was a classically trained musician in voice, piano, and organ and used her talent and ability all her life.  While at Atlantic Union College she met Albert Boardman Butler III and they were married June 12, 1938.  Shortly after they married, the couple moved to Takoma Park, MD where Albert finished his theology training at Washington Missionary College and Lois became a housewife and mother to Albert IV and Gayle.   In the summer of 1941 the family packed their few belongings and moved to Tyler, Texas where they ministered to the members of several local churches.   While serving in Texas, they had their 3rd child Carol Mae.   In the fall of 1945 the family moved to Maryland where they pastored and ministered to several churches around the Baltimore area while living in Ellicot City.   When the Chesapeake Conference realized the potential of the young couple, they were both incorporated into the conference.      It was around this time that Lois and Al’s 4th child, Hal was born. Lois started at the conference as an administrative secretary and accountant assistant before transitioning into managing Book and Bible Houses and Adventist Book Center's in the Chesapeake, New Jersey and Potomac Conferences.   She was a dedicated and diligent worker throughout her working career.   After retirement,   Lois enjoyed traveling with Albert and volunteering in the Sligo Church office, the local community service center and for Global Missions at the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.   Through her life, Lois and Al used and shared their musical talents singing together in churches and at social gatherings.   After Albert passed away on May 8, 1990, Lois continued living alone in their home in Columbia, MD enjoying her pool, pets, her flower garden, volunteering and being a caring friend to her neighbors.   As age caught up with Lois, she moved to her apartment in her son Hal’s home in Myersville, MD.  She enjoyed her years spent there but, after sustaining a fall resulting in a fractured shoulder, by necessity, she moved to the Tranquility Assisted Living Facility where she spent her remaining years.   She passed to her rest on September 19, 2016 with grandchildren at her side.   She awaits her awaking when Jesus comes to call her to life everlasting.  Lois was a beloved and faithful wife, a loving caring mother to her four children and devoted Grandmother and great Grandmother to her 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren as well as a true and loyal friend to many people through her life.    Sleep in peace, Lois.
