Mrs. Lisa Beth (Brisker) Bordenick, 70, of Frederick , died on Wednesday October 12, 2011 , at Kline Hospice House, Mt. Airy . She was the wife of Bernard (Bernie) Bordenick for 50 years.
Born on September 13, 1941 in Washington D. C., she was the daughter of the late Louis and Sarah Brisker.
She graduated when she was 16, from Theodore Roosevelt High School in DC, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. In 1960 she went to the final rounds of both the Miss Prince Georges County and Miss District of Columbia beauty contests. She received a BS degree in Elementary Education, with honors, when she was 20 from the University of Maryland , College Park . She sang in the University of MD Glee Club and was in the Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority. She also received an MS degree in Elementary Education with honors also from the University of MD. She taught computer classes, all grades, at the Newport School in Kensington , MD for 16 years. She also taught religious school (Hebrew and Jewish studies) for 36 years at Washington Hebrew Congregation where she was an original member of the Volunteer Choir and was also part of the first Adult B`nai Mitzvah program at that congregation.
When she and Bernie moved to Frederick in 2001 she taught computers at St. John Regional Catholic School and at the Friends Meeting School .
She was a charter member and on the first Board of Trustees of Congregation Kol Ami of Frederick and was also the first Chairperson of the Religious Education Committee, she also taught at the religious school and tutored at Kol Ami. Recently she taught a course on Jewish holidays at the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Frederick Community College . She was a founding member and secretary of Frederick Interfaith and was an active member of the Season for Nonviolence program at the Unity Church of Frederick.
She was an avid reader of books, and particularly enjoyed reading biographies and books by mystery writer Agatha Christie and other female mystery writers. She also enjoyed books about biblical archeology.
She was an avid world traveler and had visited the Czech Republic , Hungary , Spain , Gilbraltar , Morocco , Jordan , Egypt , Venezuela , Curacao , Canada , Germany , China , Japan , Hong Kong , Formosa , and Israel (6 Times)
She was the mother of Stephanie (James) Mizell, Bruce (Cynthia) Bordenick and Brian (Jennifer) Bordenick. She was the grandmother of Krista and Jordan Mizell, Zachary and Spencer Bordenick, and Benjamin and Sophia Bordenick.
Services will be held at 11:00am on Friday October 14, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, P. A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick . Interment will follow in Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, Clarksburg , MD. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services from 10:00am until 11:00am .
In Lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions in Lisa’s name be made to the charity of you choice.
The family will receive friends at Stephanie Mizell’s home on Friday following interment thru 6:00pm and on Sunday from 3-8pm with a service at 7:00pm .
