Lewis Melton

Lewis Earl Melton, 86, of Mount Airy, MD, passed from this life on Friday, January 6, 2017.  Born on April 20, 1930, in Galax, VA. He was the son of Isaac Earl Melton (1981) and Hallie Vaughn Melton (2001) and a 1948 graduate of Galax High School

Lew was raised on the family farm in Galax, Virginia where he helped raised milking cows, picked blackberries, and raised tobacco. He and buddies enlisted in the Army right out of high school even though his father Earl had secured him an appointment to United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. His friends were very important to him. He served with distinction in the Korean War conflict in Echelon above Corp. He met the love of his life, Isabel Scott, who was in the Women’s Army Corp, when they were both stationed at Fort Jackson, SC, in 1951. They were married on May 10, 1952 in Washington, D.C. upon their Discharge from the Army. They lived in the Washington, D.C. metro area their whole married life including D.C., Arlington, VA, Rockville, Olney, and Mount Airy, MD. Working in the Retail and Wholesale Furniture industry for 45 years, he was a General Manager, Buyer, Salesman at P. J. Nee Furniture Gallery, Rockville, MD, Mastercraft Furniture, Rockville, MD, and Kimels Furniture, Rockville, MD.  He also the owner of an appliance store for several year in the 1950’s in Arlington, VA.  He was a member of Millian Memorial United Methodist Church, Rockville, MD, serving as an Usher, and a member of the Church’s Couples Club. Lew was a die-hard Washington Redskin fan and was a season ticket holder since 1958 to present, following them from Griffiths Stadium, RFK Stadium to Fedex Field never missing any home games until later in life. He was an avid Duck-pin bowler and was on mixed leagues with his wife. Together with wife, Isabel, a member of the Laguna Pueblo Tribe in Laguna, NM and together with his boys made many cross-country trips in the family car to visit her relatives on the Laguna Reservation. He peacefully retired to his country home in Mt. Airy, MD., at the age of 72, where he enjoyed the fruits of his labor and the love of his, now large, family.

He is survived by wife, Isabel Scott Melton; sons, David Scott Melton and Glenn Thomas Melton; daughters-in-law, Ada Pecos Melton and Deborah Marie Jeanotte Melton; six grandchildren, Dana Giles and her husband, Jason, Rita Martinez and her husband, Ruben, David John Melton and his wife, Beth, Kristin Melton, Michael Melton and Madison Melton; great-grandchildren, Maria Lopez, Matthew Lopez, Aaron Giles, Alex Giles, Anthony Martinez, and Marcus Martinez; brother, Allen Grey Melton; nephew and nieces, Allen Melton, Jr., Cheryl Hurlehy, and Lisa Pedersen.

A funeral service will take place at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Millian Memorial United Methodist Church, 13016 Parkland Drive in Rockville, MD.  Interment will be at Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville, MD.
