Leroy "Lee" Phelps, 63, of Mount Airy, passed away with his loving family by his side on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster. Born on October 26, 1953, in Olney, he was the son of Willard Erwin Phelps and Sarah Jane (Allnutt) Phelps.
He was a life-long resident of the Damascus and Mt. Airy area and attended Damascus High School, Class of 1971. Lee was an avid bowler and a die-hard Yankee and Redskins fan and always had a team t-shirt and hat on.
Leroy leaves his five siblings: Diane Gulden and husband Dan of Rehoboth, DE, Larry Phelps of Mt. Airy, Mabel VanSant of Millsboro, DE, Mary Jane Gordon and Husband J.R. of Fenwick Island, DE and Jimmy Phelps and wife Vera of Ranson, WV as well as his devoted friend, Tresea Bennett of Mt. Airy. "Uncle Leroy" will be missed by his special nieces: Katie VanSant Jacoby, Penny Phelps Hodge and Sandy Phelps; great-nephews Jaksen Kurt Jacoby and Travis Newhart and great-nieces: Alyssa Newhart, Brandi Newhart and Ahna Jackman.
He was preceded in death by his cherished mother, Sarah Jane Allnutt Phelps and father Willard Erwin Phelps and by a nephew, Kurt M. Kroeger.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, September 25 at Stauffer Funeral Home, P.A., 8 East Ridgeville Boulevard, Mt. Airy. A celebration of Lee's life journey will take place at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 26, in the chapel of the funeral home, Pastor Tom Gue officiating. Private interment will be in Montgomery United Methodist Cemetery in Damascus. Serving as pallbearers will be Bob Pollard, Jeremy Jacoby, Dan Gulden, J.R. Gordon and Lee VanSant.
