Leonard Wood

Leonard Byrom Wood, 78, of Ijamsville, passed away Sunday, Sept. 4 at home with immediate family by his side. Born February 9,1938 in Somerset, Massachusetts to Amelia and Clifford Wood, Sr., he graduated from Bradford Durfee College of Technology in Fall River, MA and served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He and his wife raised a family of three daughters in Gales Ferry, CT and have been residents of Maryland since 1992. He worked as an Electrical Engineer for over 27 years at General Dynamics Electric Boat Division, building submarines for the U.S. Navy in Groton, CT, before relocating to work for Bechtel Corp. in Rockville, MD. In more recent years, he enjoyed delivering auto parts for Damascus Chevrolet and Carquest.

Len is survived by June A. Wood, his loving wife of 55 years and two daughters, Cheryl Wood and Stacey Broome, as well as two grandchildren Trey and Ryleigh, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by brother Clifford Wood, Jr., sister Dorothy French and daughter Lorie Wood.

Len and June loved traveling in their RV, camping near beaches and visiting family & friends far and wide. He looked forward to Monday nights, shooting pool with the guys. He was a two time marathon finisher in his 50’s. He built several radio controlled model airplanes, participating in airshow contests. Later he restored a late model Corvette to display at local car shows. A natural fix-it handyman, from home projects and cars, to jewelry and hair dryers for his girls, he used his creativity, New England ingenuity and determination to get the job done.

He loved his wife and daughters, grandchildren and pets dearly and will be greatly missed. In addition he was faithful in serving his church, Providence United Methodist Church in Kemptown, MD. He was involved with many church activities, including various committees, singing in the choir, serving as webmaster for the web site, and he enjoyed apple butter making in the Fall.

On Sunday, Sept. 11 at 12pm, a public memorial service will be held at Providence United Methodist Church, 3716 Kemptown Church Road, Monrovia, MD 21770.
