Leonard Stanley Kimmel Sr., 90, of Frederick, Maryland, passed from this life on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at in Frederick, MD. He was the loving husband of Arlene Kimmel for 72 years.
Born on September 15, 1933, in Hegins, PA, he was the son of the late Earl Kimmel and Verna Kessler.
He was inducted into the Army on February 26, 1952. His Basic Training Infantry was in Fort Dix, New Jersey. He attended Logistics School in Fort Lee, Virginia in 1966 and NCO School in Germany in 1972.
He served in Germany from 1952-1954 during the Cold War Era. He served in the Artillery division on the Czechoslovakia border and received a WWII Occupation Medal.
He also served in Korea in 1959 and completed two tours in Vietnam from 1966-1967 and 1968-1970. While in Vietnam, he injured his back and spent 30 days in the hospital at Tan Sin Nut in 1969.
Leonard received numerous medals and citations: Bronze Star; Meritorious Service Medal; Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal Award 2nd, Army Good Conduct Medal 6th Award; WWII Occupation Medal; U.S. Vietnam Service Medal; one Silver Star; three Bronze Stars; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Korean Defense Service Medal; and the RVN Gallantry Cross Unit Citation.
Sgt.1st Class Kimmel retired from the Army on May 1, 1976.
He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 10295 Boiling Green, Virginia, and life member of the DAV Chapter PA 21. He currently was a member of the F.S.K. American Legion, Post 11, Frederick.
He was 32nd degree Mason with the Occoquan Lodge 310 Woodbridge,Virginia and the Scottish Rite Valley of Alexandria, Virginia.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Leonard Kimmel Jr., Charles Kimmel and girlfriend Sue Haines, William Kimmel and wife Nancy, and Daniel Kimmel and wife Laura; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild on the way; his sister, Sandy Fees; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Debbie; sisters, Wilma Klinger, Arlene Herbert, Carlon Geist, Ellan Woodring; and brothers, Harold Kimmel, and Bobby Kimmel.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, MD, with a funeral service to begin at 11.
Interment will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Indiantown Gap Veterans Cemetery in Annville, PA.
