Mr. Leon R. Ridenour, 95, of Thurmont died peacefully at home on Sunday, January 12, 2014. He was the loving husband of 68 years to Betty Ridenour.
Born October 12, 1918 in Thurmont, he was the son of the late Thomas and LuLu Eyler Ridenour.
Mr. Ridenour retired from Mitchell Transportation in Union Bridge after 21 years as a truck driver. He also was a farmer and worked on the railroad as a brakeman.He was a veteran of the United States Army.
He was a member of the Hagerstown Shrine Club; Scottish Rite of Freemasonry- Frederick; Scottish Rite of Freemasonry - Baltimore; a 50-year member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Ali Ghan Temple of Cumberland; Keystone Kope of Ali Ghan Shrine of Frederick; and a 65 year member of Brunswick Masonic Lodge 191.
Additionally Mr. Ridenour was a member of the Teamster Union of Hagerstown and the Blue Ridge Sportsman Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, country music, and singing (especially yodeling), and he was an avid gardener and mechanic. Most importantly, he was an outgoing, happy person who loved being around others.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Judy Vona and husband, Jimmy, of Pasadena; a son, David Ridenour and wife, Judy, of Thurmont; one granddaughter, Amy Vona Cooney and husband, John, of Portland, Oregon; two great-grandsons, Luke and Aidan Cooney; and a daughter-in-law, Marsha Ridenour.
Mr. Ridenour was the last of his immediate family.
He was predeceased by two sons, Mark Anthony Ridenour and Richard Leon Ridenour; three brothers; and two sisters.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont, with a Masonic Service beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will begin at10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 16 from Weller United Methodist Church, 101 N. Altamont Ave., Thurmont. Officiating will be Pastor Bob Kells.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of his son, Richard, to the ALS Association DC/MD/VA Chapter, 7507 Standish Place, Rockville, MD 20855.
