Mr. Leon Manly Borden, 91, of Frederick, died peacefully in his sleep Monday, February 23, 2015. He was the loving husband of June Borden, the love of his life for 69 years.
Born May 5, 1923 in Johnson City, NY, he was the son of the late Lila H. and Leon M. Borden.
Mr. Borden graduated from Union College in Schenectady, NY in 1951. He was a Lieutenant in the Naval Air Corps in WWII, flying the PBY-4 “Flying Boat” as well as other specialty aircraft. Mr. Borden retired in 1985 after 43 years as an Electrical Engineer at IBM. Taking up running in his 50’s, he ran in a number of marathons including the Marine Corps Marathon and completed his last marathon in his early 70's. He was an avid golfer and sailor and won many horseshoe championships on Scott’s beach.
His lifelong passion was Barbershop harmony. He sang for many years with the award-winning Poughkeepsie New Yorkers as well as the Frederick Catoctones. His greatest joy was his family and the summers he spent with them at Garnet Lake in Johnsburg, NY.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven children, Ellan Brussee of Middletown, DE; Susan Landon of Frederick; Catherine Porter-Borden of Frederick; Leon Borden of Ridgefield, CT; Robert Borden of Hartfield, CT; Diana Friedell of Oneonta, NY, and John Borden of Fairfax, VA; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his sister, Marcia Branick of Ocala, FL.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD. Memorial services will begin at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 2, at Brook Hill United Methodist Church, 8946 Indian Springs Road, Frederick, MD. Officiating will be the Rev. Olivia Hunter.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Barbershop Harmony Foundation International funding music education for students in High School and College (http://www.harmonyfoundation.org/melodyringing.shtml) or the Johnsburg Emergency Squad (http://johnsburgemergencysquad.com/donate/) to support emergency services in the Garnet Lake area.
