Lela Lillard

Mrs. Lela “Chubbie” Willhide Lillard, 96, of Thurmont, died Friday, December 23, 2016 at her home.
She was born in Thurmont on October 3, 1920. She was the wife of the late Robert Lynwood Lillard. They were married June 4, 1949. She was the daughter of the late Ross H. and Elsie C. Willhide.
She was a lifelong active member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Thurmont. She graduated from Thurmont High School in 1938 and Marinello School of Beauty Culture in Baltimore. She worked as a hairdresser in Thurmont before opening a beauty shop with a partner in Hagerstown. Following marriage, she was a homemaker and helped with the family orchard. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker; beloved daughter, sister, wife and mother. She faithfully served many functions in her church throughout her life, including teaching Sunday school and visiting the sick and shut-ins. She delivered meals to senior citizens for 30 years. She was a member of the Thurmont Women’s Book Club.
She is survived by two sons, Ross Lillard and his wife, Lynda, of Thurmont and Richard Lillard and his wife, Betsey, of Clear Spring; four grandchildren, Ben Lillard and wife, Ashley, Bethany Watts and husband, Travis, Kristina Ullrich and Alex Ullrich; two great-grandchildren, Parker Lillard and Carver Dunham Ullrich. She is survived by three sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
Chubbie was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary C. Willhide and Helen W. Flanagan.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 30, 2016 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 101 East Main Street in Thurmont. The Rev. Sean DeLawder will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Trinity UCC, 101 E. Main St., Thurmont, MD 21788 or to Hospice of Frederick County.
