Lee D. Lodge, Sr.

March 28, 1919 — April 29, 2008




Mr. Lee D. Lodge, Sr., 89, of Frederick died on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was husband of Pearl Bodmer Lodge, his wife of 64 years.

Mr. Lodge was born March 28, 1919 to Captain and Mrs. Sydney Johnston Lodge of Briarley Hall Military Academy, Poolesville, MD.

He graduated from Briarley Military Academy, Amendale, MD.

He and his brothers were active in basketball and baseball in the Washington, D.C. area during their school years at Briarley. He graduated from Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College, where he played baseball and basketball, and where he is a member of the Sports Hall of Fame.

He was student government president, class president, and president of Delta Pi Alpha fraternity. Additionally, he was Cadet Colonel of the ROTC, won the Saber Award as outstanding ROTC member, and received the award for best all-around male student.

Mr. Lodge served in the Army and was stationed at Fort Benning, GA and Berlin Germany during World War II and continued to serve as a Captain in the Army Reserves until 1954. While stationed at Fort Benning, he was player coach of the Post Championship basketball team and played shortstop on the Post Championship baseball team. The baseball team also won the Georgia State Championship and participated in the national semi-pro baseball championships in Wichita, KA. While serving in Berlin, he was the athletic officer for the 78th Infantry Division and played on the basketball team that won the Berlin District Championship and participated in the European Theater Champion tournament.

After the war, Mr. Lodge was president of the Old Colony Finance Co., Mount Ranier, MD, and then owned and operated the Parkway Mart in Laurel, MD until he retired in 1980 to Frederick, MD.

In retirement, he enjoyed his Catoctin mountain cabin retreat, known as Raven Rock, with his wife and family, was active in charitable work, and was an avid sports fan.

He especially enjoyed the companionship of his pet daschounds, Choo Choo and Foxy Lady, and traveling with his wife throughout the United States and abroad.

Surviving in addition to he wife are a daughter Barbara Joyce Lodge of Silver Spring, MD; son Lee Davis Lodge, Jr. of Dunn Loring, VA; granddaughter Amanda Kay Lodge of Alexandria, VA; sister Gale Lodge Thiele of Silver Spring, MD; sister in law Marguerite Love Lodge of Peterborough Ontario, Canada; brother in law and sister in law Charles and Fern Bodmer of Fairfield, PA; and nieces and nephews, family, and friends.

He is predeceased by brothers; Sydney Johnston Lodge, Jr., John Metcalf Lodge, Thomas Van Camp Lodge, Winthrop Dale Lodge; and sister Alice Lodge Enloe.



Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4-7 PM on Friday, May 2, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

Services: Services will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 AM. Saturday, May 3,with Rev. Harry C. Cole of Calvary United Methodist Church, Frederick officiating
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
