Lawrence Phelan

May 13, 1961 — September 29, 2017

Lawrence John Phelan (Larry), 56, of Emmitsburg, Maryland, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 29, 2017. Born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on May 13, 1961, Larry was the beloved son of James Joseph Phelan, Sr. and Dorothy Ann (Liddy) Phelan.

Larry grew up in Emmitsburg, MD, a short bike ride to Mount Saint Mary’s Memorial Gymnasium where he spent countless hours shooting (or chasing) basketballs. After four years of service in the United States Air Force, Larry attended the Mount and was always the biggest Mount hoops fan. He worked for Goodwill Industries until his death, a perfect employer for someone known for his enormous heart.

Larry was a friend to everyone he met. In a world full talkers, Larry was an exceptional listener; he wanted to hear your story. He will be remembered for his tremendous kindness to others, his incredible sense of humor, his story telling, and his amazing ability to recall random pieces of trivia. Larry loved his family and was a wonderful son, brother, and uncle.

In addition to his parents, Larry is survived by his siblings; James Phelan, Jr., Lynne Phelan Robinson, Carol Phelan-Marsh and husband John, Robert Phelan and wife Cheryl, nephews and nieces; James Robinson, Kate Robinson, Mary Robinson, Jack Marsh, Conor Marsh, Kelsey Phelan, Erin Phelan, Maureen Marsh, Molly Phelan, and Lucas Phelan. Larry will also be remembered by his many good friends, especially his best buddy, Joe Zanella and his second family at the Ott House Pub in Emmitsburg.

The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Church in Emmitsburg, and a memorial Mass will follow at 11 a.m. with Father Charles Krieg as the officiant. Interment will be private.

The family asks that you honor Larry’s memory by looking for the humorous side of life and encouraging others to tell you their stories. Even better, do so over a cold one at the Ott House or a slice at Stavros. We love you, Lar!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Larry’s name to: Vigilant Hose Company, P.O. Box 171, Emmitsburg, MD 21727 or Emmitsburg Ambulance Company, P.O. Box 1101, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at www.staufferfuneralhome.com.
