Lawrence Hammill Byrd

Lawrence Hammill Byrd (Byrdie), 83, of Frederick, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023 at Country Meadows Retirement Community. He was the husband of Sandra Byrd for 65 years. Born on August 25, 1939, in Takoma Park, he was the son of George Maddox Byrd and Vivian Edith (Hart) Byrd.

Mr. Byrd was a Captain in the Metropolitan Police Department, Washington, DC, retiring from the force in1981. He spoke highly of his career and especially loved recovering stolen cars during his time on the Auto Squad. Byrdie enjoyed listening to bluegrass music, watching Orioles games, woodworking, reading western novels, antiquing with Sandra, and spending time with family.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Byrd is survived by his children Steve (Lori) Byrd, Susan (Rick) Castro, and Laura (James) Allard; and grandchildren Jason (Athena) Byrd, Ellen (William) Dees, Kevin Byrd, Nick (Kristy) Castro, Chris (Johanna) Castro, Andrew (Anne) Castro, and Matthew (Rachel) Andrews. He was also dearly loved by his many beautiful great-grandchildren and his older brother, Paul Byrd. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, James Byrd.
