Mrs. Laura Ann Day, 92, of Mt. Airy died on Sunday, April 20, 2008, at Lorien Life Center, Mt. Airy. She was the wife of the late Jesse Downey Day, Jr who died in 2005.
Born on May 19, 1915, in Frederick County she was the daughter of the late Murray Otis and Daisy Day.
Laura was a 1931 graduate of Mt. Airy High School, a 1934 graduate of Towson State Normal School, now Towson University and took additional courses at Western Maryland College and University of Maryland. She taught at Winfield (1934-42) and Mt. Airy (1943-45 and 1950-74) Elementary Schools.
Mrs. Day was the recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award in 1973, was a member of the Carroll County Education, Maryland State Teachers and Associations; as well as the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society. While teaching, she worked with students planting trees and shrubs in the bird sanctuary/wildlife habitat behind the elementary school, and was the PTA President.
Active in the Mt. Airy Garden Club, she served as president from 1979-81. She also was a life member of the Federated Garden Clubs of America. The garden club has done much to beautify the town over the years including: hanging wreaths on Pine Grove Chapel, planting daffodils and day lilies at the Rt 27 & I-70 cloverleaf and planting flowers in front of the library and F&M Bank downtown.
Mrs Day was a member of Ki-Wives, serving one term as president, participating in Kids Day with the Kiwanis Club including the Bike Rodeo that supported the ARC of Carroll County.
Laura was a life long member of Ridgeville/Howard Chapel United Methodist Church serving as Sunday School Superintendent, president of the Women's Christian Society. She also a member of the Damascus Travel Club and the Mt. Airy 55+ Club and enjoyed activities and the Senior Center.
Laura took great pride in her hometown, working tirelessly on many projects including the Centennial Celebration Committee in 1994, helping with displays, sang in the chorus, gave presentations on education in Mt. Airy and as a result was inducted into the Mt. Airy Hall of Fame on March 20, 2007, which was the highlight of the last few years of her life.
Surviving are 2 sons: David E. Day and wife Lisa and Douglas E. Day and wife Mary Lou all of Mt. Airy; 5 grandchildren: Laurie Van Bibber and husband Michael of Frederick, Dana Day of FL, Downey B. Day, Ashley A. Day and Jesse E. Day all of Mt. Airy; 3 great grandchildren: Emily Van Bibber, Braxton Day and Taylor Day. Mrs. Day was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Day Krantz

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 10, at Howard Chapel United Methodist Church, 1970 Long Corner Rd, Mt. Airy with Rev. Laura Schultz officiating.
Interment, private.
