Larry B. Gorman
August 22, 1942 — May 15, 2024
Boonsboro
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Larry Blaine Gorman, of Boonsboro, MD, who left us peacefully on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, at his home. Larry was a caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born in Hagerstown, MD, on August 22, 1942, and raised in Cearfoss, he was the son of the late Ralph Cooledge Gorman and Genevieve Spickler-Clever. He graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1960 and continued his education at Frostburg State College and Shippensburg College, where he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education respectively.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Lorraine. Together, they built a life together filled with the love for each other, family, and amazing friends. He was the proud father of two children, Shane Gorman (Shannon) and Lindsay Gorman (Michael). Larry’s legacy continues through his five cherished grandchildren: Olivia, Elle, Audrie, Carter, and Brody, who will remember him for his warmth, wisdom, generosity and playful spirit.
He began his career as a dedicated educator, serving as a high school teacher and basketball coach for 15 years. He passed along his knowledge and values to his students, leaving a lasting impact on many. Beyond the classroom, Larry pursued his love of cars and speed as a late-model race car driver in the Mid-Atlantic area. By combining his work ethic, dedicated crew members and God-given talent, he built a successful racing career and was later recognized by several racing associations and publications. He was inducted into the Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown Hall of Fame (1986) and the Hagerstown Speedway Hall of Fame (2001).
After stepping away from teaching, Larry and Lorraine took on the challenge of becoming small business owners of several 7-11 franchises in the Hagerstown and Frederick areas. His regular customers became his friends and he had a special knack for connecting with people around him. As a father he loved to share stories and to brag about his family, especially his children. He had endless knowledge about NASCAR, the Pittsburgh Steelers, college basketball, the weather, lawn maintenance, etc. and loved to share a funny story.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on May 31st, from 4-8 p.m., at The Historic Springfield Barn, 12 Springfield Lane, Williamsport, where family and friends can gather to honor his memory and the joy he brought to their lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in his honor. www.stjude.org
