Lakshmi Misra went to her heavenly abode on November 26th, 2023, at Shady Grove Hospital in Rockville, Maryland. Lakshmi was 89 years old.
Lakshmi’s life was long and eventful. She lost her father, Ram Deo Awasthi, in 1937, her mother, Janak Dulari Shukla, in 1958, her husband, Prem Krishna Misra, in 1982, and her younger son, Dr. Sudhakar Misra, in 2013. She moved to the United States thirty years ago to be close to her two sons, Dr. Sudhakar and Dr. Prabhakar Misra, with whom she resided for the next three decades. She would go on to touch and shape the lives of her four grandchildren, Isha, Uday, Kiran, and Anjali, and her many friends and relatives over her lifetime.
Lakshmi loved to read, especially Hindi literature and religious books. In her later years it would be hard to remove books from her bed even when she was ready to fall asleep. The nurses in her nursing care facility would constantly try to remove all the books and papers that had taken permanent refuge on her bed. Besides reading, she loved to meet and talk to people who would visit her and try to borrow her treasure trove of Hindi books and magazines. She was very spiritual, but not tied to rituals and material possessions. She had truly achieved nirvana even before her soul left her body.
Lakshmi is survived by her older son, Dr. Prabhakar Misra, his wife Suneeta Misra, and four grandchildren. She will be missed by her many friends and relatives in India and the United States.
