Kenneth Greenwood

January 11, 1929 — February 2, 2018

Kenneth O. Greenwood, 89, of Frederick, who served his country in the military nearly 40 years, died at Frederick Memorial Hospital on Feb. 2nd, after a lengthy illness.

Known to his friends and customers as Ken or Kenny, he owned and operated Greenwood Ironworks & Welding for some 25 years, designing, fabricating, and installing decorative railings for homes and businesses throughout Carroll, Frederick, and Montgomery Counties.  He   previously operated Atlantic gasoline service stations in Frederick and Walkersville.

Born in Parrsville, Mt. Airy, MD, he was married for 67 years to Jane E. Shafer who died April 2017.

Mr. Greenwood enlisted in the Maryland National Guard in 1951 and served for 3 years, followed by 3 years in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Breckinridge, KY, and Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX. Following active duty, Mr. Greenwood joined the U.S. Army Reserves at Frederick, retiring in 1989 after 38 years of service as an E-7 Sergeant 1st Class.  He participated in competition target shooting while in the Army Reserves.

Mr. Greenwood was a skilled woodworker and a volunteer Braddock Heights fireman.

Ken and Jane enjoyed birdwatching, campouts with their camping club friends and motorhome touring throughout the western states and spending time with their friends and family.

Survivors include brother-in-law Richard Shafer and wife, Zoe Ann, of Saratoga Springs, NY; nephew, Christopher Shafer, wife Ann; great nephews, Alexander and Wyatt of Baltimore, MD; nephew, Ryan Shafer, wife Michelle; great nephew, Jack and great niece, Savannah Shafer of Fairport, NY; nephew, Steve Shafer and wife, Lisa; great nephews, Jacob and Zachary Shafer of Ortanna, PA; niece, Olivia Elcano and family of Bakersfield, CA.; sisters-in-laws, Glendy Villa of Union Bridge, MD; and Vena Jean Shafer of Keyser, WV.

His father, Vernon L. Greenwood, mother, Addie Porter Greenwood, of Mt. Airy, brother, Mack, and nephews, Tommy and Steven, of Bakersfield predeceased him.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 9, 2018 from  2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike Frederick, MD 21702.

A Celebration of Ken's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike Frederick, MD 21702 followed by burial with military honors at Union Cemetery, Burkittsville, MD.
