Katie Campbell, 33, of Frederick died on August 20, 2016, at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a three year struggle with breast cancer. Katie was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 22, 1983, to Donna and Gus Siegmund. She grew up in Ferndale, Michigan, before attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she met her husband Andrew. She and her husband spent loving and adventurous years in Philadelphia and in the Peace Corps, before settling in Washington, DC, where Katie received her Master’s in Arts in International Development Studies. She was passionate about helping the world’s most marginalized, and spent years doing human rights work in Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, and more, working with children, orphans, and farmers. She later became an award-winning speaker, author, and advocate for young adult cancer fighters and survivors. Katie is survived by her husband, parents, brother Andrick Siegmund, sister-in-law Lauren Siegmund, and myriad beloved friends and family members.
An informal memorial in Katie's honor will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick, 4880 Elmer Derr Road, Frederick, MD 21703 on Saturday, August 27, at 12 PM.
