Kathryn Best

April 21, 1926 — July 20, 2014

Kathryn R. (Kennedy) Best, 88, of Hagerstown, Maryland, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at Autumn Assisted Living in Hagerstown.

Born on April 21, 1926, in Frederick, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Anna P. (Conrad) Kennedy.  Her husband, Linford G. Best, preceded her in death on September 4, 2005.

Kathryn was a member of Brownsville Church of the Brethren, where she served as a Deacon, a Sunday School Teacher, a secretary of the board,  a youth choir director, choir member, and was on the kitchen and fellowship committees.

Kathryn had been employed with Newberry's, People's Drug Store, and Taylor and Company, all in Frederick.   She also drove a school bus for Pleasant Valley Elementary School and the Boonsboro Schools for nineteen years.

She served as an Election Board Official for Southern Washington County; served 3 terms as President of the PTA at Pleasant Valley Elementary School; and was a volunteer with the Ladies Auxiliary of Washington County Hospital in the X-ray Department and the Emergency Room.

Kathryn is survived by one daughter, Rebecca A. Younkins of Hagerstown, Maryland; two sons, Ernest G. Best and wife Mary of Hagerstown, and David L. Best and wife Suzie of Kilmarnock, Virginia; four grandsons, Scott, Ben, Joseph, and Patrick Best; one step-granddaughter, Vonda Weller; four great grandchildren, Jonathan, Ryn, Brie, and Joey; and four step-great grandchildren, Bryan, Brandon, Mark and Drayvin.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Adrian Younkins; and four brothers, Robert, Joseph, John, and William Kennedy.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road in Knoxville, Maryland.  Rev. Alan M. Smith and Rev. R. Thomas Fralin, Jr. will officiate.  Final resting-place ceremonies will follow at the Brownsville Heights Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from  6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland, as well as one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road, Knoxville, Maryland, 21758.
