Kathleen Newcomer

Kathleen Virginia (Smith) Newcomer, 96, of Benevola, Maryland, passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Somerford House Assisted Living in Hagerstown.
Born on June 12, 1916 in Mapleville, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Harry Mumma Smith and Sadie Estelle Cline and step-daughter of J. William Stine.
Kathleen was a 1935 graduate of Boonsboro High School, where she worked as a secretary for three years after graduation.
On November 23, 1938, she was married to Richard H. Newcomer, and they lived on and farmed the Newcomer Family Farm at Benevola. Richard preceded her in death on February 28, 2005, after 66 years of marriage.
Kathleen was a lifelong member of the Benevola United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and played the piano and the organ for many years.
She was also a member of the Antietam Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Washington County Farm Bureau, the Washington County Historical Society, the Boonsboro Historical Society, and the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruann Newcomer George and husband Jack of Benevola; seven nieces; and seven nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Kathleen was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Mozingo, Dorothy Smith, and Frances Gearhart; an infant brother, George Smith; a brother, Leroy Smith; and a step-brother Preston Stine.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012 at Benevola United Methodist Church, 19925 Benevola Church Road, Boonsboro. Rev. John H. Dean will officiate. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
